Head Women's Volleyball Coach
Coach Crouch was named the USC women’s volleyball head coach on Jan. 8, 2018. In his first season at USC Crouch has maintained a record of 19-8 finishing 2nd in the Pac-12 and 7th in RPI.
Previous to his time at USC Crouch took over at Portland in 2014 after four seasons (2010-13) at Saint Mary’s College, where he was an assistant with the indoor program and head coach of the beach team.
The 48 victories in his final 3 years at Portland was the programs best 3-season total since 1984-86. The Pilots’ 10-8 third place WCC finish in 2016 was its most league wins since 1985 and highest conference finish since 1989. He led Portland to the program’s first-ever victories over Top 10, Top 15, and Top 25 opponents. Crouch coached three All-WCC first team players and a WCC All-Freshman team pick, along with three WCC All-Academic first teamers. He also helped establish beach volleyball as a varsity sport at Portland in 2016.
JJ Van Niel
Associate Head Volleyball Coach
JJ Van Niel is in his first season (2018) as the associate head coach for the Women of Troy.
Van Niel served as an assistant coach at Utah for two seasons (2015-16) before he was promoted to associate head coach for the 2017 season. He helped the Utes to a 20-12 season in 2016 and a 24-10 record in 2017 as Utah advanced to the NCAA regional semifinal for just the third time in program history.
Prior to his time at Utah, Van Niel was a consultant coach and scout for the U.S. Women’s National Team, where he also served as a team leader and has assisted group training since 2013. While with the USWNT, Van Niel was responsible for coordinating and performing data analysis, game planning, and assistance during on-court practices.
Assistant Women's Volleyball Coach
Alex Dunphy is in her first year (2018) as an assistant coach for the Women of Troy. She returns to her alma mater, where she was a member of the 2003 NCAA champion USC squad, following a year as the assistant director of operations and video coordinator for Minnesota.
Prior to her time with the Golden Gophers, Dunphy served as an assistant coach at Pepperdine for three seasons (2014-16) and was an assistant coach at Miami in 2013. With the Hurricanes, she trained the setters and assisted with recruiting, practice planning, and video breakdown. Miami went 19-12 overall and made its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament.
Director of Operations
Haley Brightwell is in her first season (2018) as USC’s director of operations.
Brightwell previously served as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) for three seasons (2015-17). Under head coach Ryan Young, Brightwell helped the Tritons to a 22-8 record in 2017; the program’s most wins in a single season in 10 years. While at UMSL, Brightwell saw the team improve from 16 wins in 2015 to 18 in 2016; and 22 in 2017.
